Do you suffer from acne, fine lines, wrinkles, or large pores? What about other scars? Looking for a treatment that’s non-invasive and effective? If so, microneedling could be for you. What is microneedling? Read on to find out.

WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure. During a microneedling procedure, your skin is numbed with a topical anesthetic. Your treatment provider then uses a tool with tiny needles to lightly puncture the first skin layer. The goal of the treatment is to cause the skin to react to these small wounds. The skin then grows tissue rich in collagen and elasticity. Collagen production decreases with age, making this process particularly helpful if you have age-related facial scarring. Microneedling is an effective, nonsurgical treatment option.

BENEFITS

There are several benefits to microneedling. The first is that because it’s not invasive, there’s little to no downtime involved. Most treatments only take a few hours at the provider’s office, and you can see results after 4-6 sessions. Microneedling is also more affordable than laser treatments and might be better suited for people with darker skin because there’s no heat involved.

In terms of results, microneedling is effective at treating several facial conditions and some in other areas of the body as well. These include:

  • Hair loss
  • Acne
  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Sunspots
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Enlarged pores

Typically, you can expect to see results after as few as four sessions, each lasting about 30 minutes.

SIDE EFFECTS

Since microneedling does involve needles pricking your skin, side effects do occur sometimes. These typically occur in the treatment area. Some side effects include bleeding, pain, redness, and peeling. In rare cases, an infection can develop at the treatment site if the equipment is not properly cleaned and or sanitized. Pregnant women and people with active acne breakouts, or open scars, or skin infections should seek another form of skin treatment.

MICRONEEDLING VS PEELS

Curious how microneedling compares to other facial treatments like chemical peels? In truth, both are great options to improve and enhance the appearance of your skin. It all depends on what condition you want to address. Overall, microneedling is an excellent choice if you want to avoid any chemicals on your skin but still get the benefits of tissue and collagen renewal. But if you can’t decide on which treatment to get, don’t worry! Some patients decide to get both for optimal results. You can’t go wrong with either microneedling or chemical peels – it’s all about your preference and needs.
