Do you have wrinkles you’d rather not have? Although aging is a natural process, wrinkles typically show up as you age on your forehead, cheeks, chin, and around your eyes. Wrinkles don’t cause any health issues, but they might make you look tired or older than you really are. At Ascent Laser Aesthetics, we want to help you look and feel your best. One way we do that is through offering Botox to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. But how does Botox work? Is it safe? Read on to find out the answer to these questions.

WHAT IS BOTOX?

Botox is a brand name for Botulinum Toxin, which affects muscle and nerve responses.  The treatment works by relaxing specific muscles in your face, which can reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles differ from fine lines and other wrinkles because they are connected to the muscles that move when your face does if you squint or smile. These are the kinds of wrinkles that Botox treats effectively. In addition to Botox, our team also offers Xeomin, Dysport, and Jeuveau treatments.

Fine lines and aging-related wrinkles, known as static wrinkles, are more about the thinning of collagen in the skin layers rather than muscle movement. Unfortunately, Botox is not an effective treatment option for these types of wrinkles. Our team does treat static wrinkles with fillers and/or PDO sutures, so give us a call for more information on those treatments!

In addition to smoothing out dynamic wrinkles, Botox is also prescribed as a treatment for migraines, neck spasms and other medical conditions. The treatments for these conditions involve different dosages than what is prescribed to treat wrinkles.

IS BOTOX SAFE?

According to clinical discussions from the Mayo Clinic, Botox is considered safe for short and even long term use for most patients. This is because the dose used to target and smooth wrinkles is smaller than those used for migraines or other conditions.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?

At Ascent Laser Aesthetics, we offer Botox treatments to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles around your eyes, forehead, cheeks, and smile lines. The cosmetic procedure does not require anesthesia, and depending on the areas you wish to treat, should only take a few minutes. Ideally, results from the treatment should last about three to six months. Because dynamic wrinkles appear due to facial movements, you will need to get another treatment after that time. Botox is most effective on the upper third of the face.

Botox is an injection, and the treatments are quick and should not be too painful. If you do experience side effects, they can include headaches, eye dryness, or pain at the injection site. Overall, we want your treatment experience to be comfortable and most importantly, effective!
